The world is focusing on the Greater Bay Area, and Hong Kong is ready to continue serving as the "super connector" and "super value adder" between the Greater Bay Area and global markets.
On September 3, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu delivered a video address at the forum, announcing that the country will host the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Leaders' Informal Meeting in Shenzhen for the first time. Hong Kong will also host the APEC Finance Ministers' Meeting in October, while cities within the Greater Bay Area will organize various ministerial meetings. The world is focusing on the Greater Bay Area, and Hong Kong is fully prepared to continue serving as the "super connector" and "super value creator" between the Greater Bay Area and global markets.
John Lee Ka-chiu further stated that under the "one country, two systems" principle, Hong Kong is the only city in the world that integrates the advantages of China and international markets. Hong Kong operates under a common law system, allowing for the free flow of capital, information, and talent, complemented by a simple tax system, making it a recognized leading international financial center. Moreover, with Hong Kong's excellent research capabilities combined with the advanced manufacturing strengths of the mainland, Hong Kong is actively developing the Northern Metropolis University Town and promoting collaboration among universities, research institutions, and industries to enhance long-term competitiveness.
Hong Kong's Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po pointed out in his video address that, driven by geopolitical dynamics and technological transformation, Asia's coordinated development is entering a new phase. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area possesses unique advantages, such as being an international financial center, housing vibrant innovation and technology clusters, substantial advanced manufacturing, and a multimodal transportation network, making it an important platform for promoting cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region and connecting the mainland with the world.
In terms of finance, Paul Chan Mo-po stated that Hong Kong can provide diversified financing channels for economies at different stages of development, supporting innovation, infrastructure, and green transformation, while sharing experiences in leveraging fintech to promote inclusive finance. He also noted that the Greater Bay Area has competitive advantages in cutting-edge technologies and that commercial aerospace has significant growth potential; Hong Kong can play a bridging role leveraging its international connections, client network, and standard convergence capabilities.
He mentioned that Hong Kong's advantages include a bilingual environment in Chinese and English, a multicultural setting, a good rule of law, public safety, top-tier universities, and extensive international connections. The city is committed to nurturing the talents required by the country and building an international education hub that serves the Asia-Pacific and the world. The Northern Metropolis University Town will become a hub for technology, industry, and talent, creating a greater regional impact.
