Bank of America stated that SpaceX's (SPCX.US) plan to enter the mobile communication service market may benefit T-Mobile US, tower operators, and spectrum value.
After discussions with T-Mobile US (TM.US) Chief Technology Officer John Saw and executives from US communication infrastructure companies CareTrust REIT Inc (REIT) and Crown Castle (CCI.US), Bank of America Corp indicated that SpaceX (SPCX.US) entering the mobile communication service market could benefit T-Mobile US, tower operators, and spectrum value. According to previous reports, with its established advantage in satellite-to-smartphone direct communication services, SpaceX is planning to enter the mobile communication operation market. The stable income from mobile communication services will fund SpaceX's ambitious dreams, such as Mars colonization. As it continuously expands its share in the $740 billion market, it poses a threat to existing telecom operators, including T-Mobile US. For T-Mobile US, Bank of America stated that SpaceX's limited cellular spectrum resources and the large-scale infrastructure required to build a nationwide communication network will restrict its ability to compete directly with existing mobile operators. Therefore, satellite connections are likely to remain a supplement to the terrestrial network rather than replace it. This perspective from Bank of America suggests that SpaceX's competition with T-Mobile US may not be as intense as some investors anticipate. Meanwhile, Bank of America analysts Matthew Griffiths and his team pointed out that SpaceX will face significant obstacles in constructing a nationwide terrestrial mobile communication network, including limited cellular spectrum resources and the need to build thousands of communication towers and small cells, while also meeting requirements related to zoning, power, fiber optics, and leasing. Analysts also noted that a network model heavily reliant on users deploying home base stations is impractical. John Saw estimated that to achieve outdoor coverage comparable to T-Mobile US, SpaceX might need to deploy between 500 million to 1.5 billion home base stations, which would result in a total cost that is quite high based on an estimated cost of around $1000 per home base station. Crown Castle also stated that home base stations are better suited for filling small coverage gaps, while communication towers can provide power, fiber optics, and permit support for larger-scale network deployments. Analysts pointed out that considering SpaceX has ample funding resources, the company might be able to deploy ground communication sites more quickly. However, to match existing operators in terms of network coverage, capacity, indoor signal performance, and mobile communication capabilities, significant spectrum resources and capital investment will still be required, along with several years of construction and execution. Analysts added that satellite direct-to-device services are likely to remain a supplement to terrestrial communication networks, especially in very remote rural areas.
