IBM (IBM.US) has released the world's first dual-architecture mainframe processor that simultaneously supports both IBM and Arm (ARM.US) instruction sets.

At the annual Hot Chips conference held on Monday, IBM (IBM.US) unveiled the worlds first dual-architecture mainframe processor. This chip enables enterprises to run applications simultaneously on both IBM and Arm (ARM.US) computing platforms, achieving truly seamless cross-architecture collaboration.
This new processor allows businesses to run both the z/OS and Linux systems on the IBM Z platform while also supporting a native Arm architecture Linux system, thus harnessing IBMs traditional advantages in security, reliability, and scalability.
The chip is manufactured using a 2-nanometer process and integrates 11 high-performance cores. IBM stated that its clock speed can exceed 5.7GHz and features built-in AI inference accelerators for fraud detection during transactions, dedicated on-chip data processing units for I/O acceleration, and large cache architectures designed for high-load enterprise applications. IBM further noted that each core can simultaneously execute instructions from both Arm and IBM architectures.
IBM executive Christian Jacobi stated, "As businesses continue to modernize their application portfolios and integrate AI into core business processes, they need infrastructure that can offer more choices. This processor marks a significant breakthrough for IBM Z and LinuxONE in architecture. By introducing native Arm support into our platform, we enable users to tap into one of the fastest-growing software ecosystems in the industry while continuing to uphold the core qualities of IBM systems as the cornerstone of today's enterprise operations."
Arm executive Mohamed Awad pointed out, "As AI applications continue to expand, the computing landscape is increasingly converging on the Arm architecture. IBM Z and LinuxONE support some of the most challenging workloads in highly regulated industries globally. Bringing Arm computing capabilities and its software ecosystem to these platforms will further drive this trend deeper into mission-critical enterprise infrastructure, providing businesses with more choices in AI deployment."
