Driven by the strong growth in demand for artificial intelligence (AI) optical communications, Lumentum (LITE.US) reported better-than-expected results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026 and guidance for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. The financial report shows that Lumentum's revenue in the fourth quarter rose by 109.3% year-on-year to $1.006 billion, exceeding analysts' average expectations of $990 million. Although the outperformance was not large, it still holds significance given the high market attention on the optical communications sector. By business segment, revenue from the components business was $649 million, an increase of 102.7% year-on-year; revenue from the systems business was $357 million, a rise of 122.6%. Both major business segments doubled their revenues, indicating that demand expansion is not concentrated in a single product line. The construction of AI data centers brings not just standalone device demand but also drives overall demand across a range of solutions from lasers and optical devices to system-level solutions. In terms of profits, adjusted net income was $326 million, a 415% year-on-year increase; adjusted earnings per share were $3.23, better than analysts' average estimate of $2.97; adjusted gross margin was 50.4%, up 1,260 basis points year-on-year, surpassing the average analyst estimate of 48.8%; and adjusted operating margin was 36.6%, an increase of 2,160 basis points year-on-year. The rapid improvement in Lumentums profit model indicates that the demand for high-end optical communication products, scale effects, and product mix improvements are all working together to release profit leverage. It is worth noting that Lumentum incurred a non-cash debt repayment loss of $7.862 billion due to the conversion of certain convertible notes into equity, resulting in a GAAP net loss of $7.162 billion for the fourth quarter. Lumentums CEO, Michael Hurlston, stated that the fourth quarter performance showcases broad market progress, with key growth driverssuch as OCS solutions and cloud module businessesbeginning to contribute incrementally. He remarked, Lumentum is at the core of industry transformation. As AI computing workloads continue to accelerate in speed and bandwidth, data center architects are adopting optical links as the primary means of connectivity. While our fourth quarter results indicate that the business has grown across the board, key growth drivers like OCS solutions and cloud module business (with our ongoing push for the adoption of 1.6T optical modules) are gradually becoming apparent. The increasing demand for ultra-high-power CPO lasers, initial orders of ELS modules, and our broad participation in the NPO space indicate that optical technology is beginning to penetrate the area of rack interconnects, significantly enhancing our potential market size for optical technologies. Lumentums guidance for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 also exceeded expectations. The company anticipates first quarter revenue to be between $1.225 billion and $1.275 billion, with a midpoint prediction of $1.250 billion, which surpasses analysts' average expectation of $1.150 billion; adjusted earnings per share are expected to be between $4.05 and $4.35, with a midpoint estimate of $4.20 exceeding the average analyst expectation of $3.58. Michael Hurlston stated, Looking ahead, our momentum will continue to accelerate driven by demand for AI, with the anticipated revenue midpoint for the first quarter reaching $1.250 billion, achieving the goal over a quarter ahead of our original schedule. It is noted that as AI clusters expand, the pressures on bandwidth, power consumption, and latency inside data centers are rising rapidly. Traditional electrical connections face bottlenecks under higher speeds and higher density scenarios, prompting optical interconnects to begin penetrating from rack-to-rack and switch-to-switch connections further into rack-level and near-chip directions. This is perhaps the most imaginative aspect of Lumentums reportif optical demand transcends traditional data center interconnects and enters rack-level interconnections and near-package architectures, the companys potential market space will be re-evaluated. However, Lumentum also described these as early signs, indicating that these directions are still in the early verification and order conversion stages. The market will subsequently focus on whether these CPO, ELS, and NPO opportunities can transition from initial orders and project engagements to sustainable scaled revenue. As of press time, Lumentums stock rose over 3% in after-hours trading on Tuesday after previously experiencing a drop of more than 4%. This stock performance indicates that the market recognizes the strong demand for optical communications and earnings guidance reflected in its financial report, while also digesting the significant GAAP loss, earlier heightened expectations, and valuation pressures.
