JP Morgan CEO supports Paramount (PSKY.US) and Warner (WBD.US) acquisition: Competition is already fierce enough, don't let state-level lawsuits undermine the vitality of the capital markets.
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon recently expressed reservations about the deal, noting that while the U.S. Department of Justice has approved Paramount's acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery for $110 billion, some states are still trying to obstruct the transaction.
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon recently expressed his reservations regarding the ongoing efforts by various states to hinder Paramount's (PSKY.US) $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD.US), despite the approval from the U.S. Department of Justice.
In an interview on Wednesday, Dimon stated, "The Department of Justice is the expert agency in antitrust matters, and transactions should certainly be subject to their review. However, if every transaction of this kind has to be voted on by the states, there is a genuine risk that it could cause significant harm to our capital markets and the entire dynamic system."
Last month, California led a coalition of 11 other states in filing a lawsuit to challenge this major media merger. Paramount subsequently announced it would delay its acquisition of Warner Bros. until five days after a final court ruling on the merger, or until June, whichever comes first.
Dimon also noted that he believes competition in the film and television industry is very intense. He remarked in the interview, "The industry is highly competitive. Some companies are struggling, while others are doing well, with significant influxes of capital from multiple channels, including large corporations."
Dimon added, "This is a highly competitive market. All agencies with real expertise in antitrust matters have approved this transaction. Even if the deal goes through, both for David Ellison and other participants in the industry, they will face a severe competitive landscape going forward."
JPMorgan Chase is leading a $10 billion loan facility to support the Warner Bros. acquisition and is also serving as an advisor for the deal.
AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. Class A (AMC.US) CEO Adam Aron stated last week that he supports this large media merger.
In an article published on Wednesday, Aron wrote, "This deal is crucial for the future of the industry and must be completed as soon as possible so that we can all leverage this momentum for growthmomentum that has only just been established after six years of tough times. But to do so, we must overcome the legal challenges posed by a group of state attorneys general who may have good intentions but questionable methods."
