According to the US Axios news website reported on the 17th, US officials and sources revealed that the US is preparing to unfreeze $20 billion of Iranian funds in exchange for Iran's abandonment of its enriched uranium stockpile. US President Trump said on social media the same day that the US will obtain all of Iran's enriched uranium stockpile, but will not pay any amount in any way or form. The report stated that the US and Iran are currently negotiating a 3-page ceasefire memorandum, and the plan to exchange unfrozen funds for uranium is one of the contents. Currently, both sides are negotiating on how to dispose of Iran's enriched uranium and how much Iranian assets will be unfrozen. Sources said that in the early stages of negotiations, the US had prepared to unfreeze $6 billion for Iran to purchase food, medicine, and other humanitarian goods. At that time, Iran had requested $27 billion to be unfrozen. The latest amount being discussed between the US and Iran is $20 billion. In addition, the US had requested Iran to agree to transport all its nuclear materials to US territory, but Iran only agreed to dilute these materials within Iran. According to a compromise proposal currently under discussion, some highly enriched uranium will be sent to a third country, not necessarily the US. The ceasefire memorandum being negotiated also reportedly includes a clause about Iran voluntarily suspending uranium enrichment activities. Iran will be allowed to possess a nuclear research reactor for medical isotope production, but must promise that all its nuclear facilities must be built above ground, while existing underground nuclear facilities will remain deactivated. In the previous round of negotiations, the US demanded that Iran agree to suspend uranium enrichment activities for 20 years, while Iran proposed only a 5-year suspension. The report said that according to a source familiar with mediation work, the second round of face-to-face talks between the US and Iran is expected to be held in the capital of Pakistan, Islamabad, on the 19th.
