The mediator for the Iran issue is making a final effort to reach a 45-day ceasefire agreement.
Currently, the US and Iran are negotiating on the specific terms of a potential 45-day ceasefire agreement, which is aimed at paving the way for a final end to the war. Analysts point out that the possibility of reaching partial agreements within the next 48 hours remains slim, but this effort is the only opportunity to avoid escalation of the situation. The intraday gain of Brent crude oil narrowed to 0.55%.
The United States, Iran, and regional mediators are engaged in a final game of negotiation on a phased ceasefire plan, which is currently the diplomatic way out to avoid a sharp escalation of war and prevent massive destruction of Middle Eastern energy infrastructure.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Trump believes it is "highly likely" to reach an agreement with Iran by April 7. Later, according to CCTV News, Trump briefly posted on social media, "Tuesday April 7, 8 pm Eastern Time!" The public believes that this seems to be Trump once again extending the so-called "deadline" set for Iran.
According to Axios citing informed sources, the US and Iran are currently negotiating the specific terms of a potential 45-day ceasefire agreement, aiming to pave the way for a final end to the war. Sources point out that the possibility of reaching a partial agreement within the next 48 hours is still slim, but this effort is the only opportunity to avoid escalation.
Two sources stated that the US-led plan to launch a massive bombing campaign on Iran's energy facilities is currently in a state of readiness, but the purpose of extending the deadline is to give negotiations a final chance.
Upon hearing this news, Brent crude's intraday gains narrowed to 0.55%.
Two-stage plan: Ceasefire for time, final agreement pending
Mediators are discussing a two-stage agreement framework with the parties: the first stage is a potential 45-day ceasefire period, during which the parties will negotiate the permanent end of the war, with the ceasefire period can be extended if needed; the second stage is a formal peace agreement.
The mediation work is being led by Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey as intermediaries, while Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are also maintaining direct communication channels through text messages.
A US official stated that the Trump administration has recently put forward multiple proposals to Iran, but Iranian officials have not accepted any of them so far.
Strait of Hormuz and highly enriched uranium: Iran's core bargaining chips
Mediators are currently discussing confidence-building measures that Iran can take on two core issues: reopening the Strait of Hormuz and disposing of Iran's high-enriched uranium reserves - the latter involves removing it from Iran or diluting it.
These two topics are the main bargaining chips for Iran in negotiations, and Iran will not accept only a 45-day ceasefire to give up these two cards.
The focus of the mediators is currently on evaluating whether Iran can take partial steps on the two issues in the first stage of the agreement, and also on studying what measures the Trump administration can take to provide Iran with guarantees that the ceasefire will not be superficial and war will not resume.
Iranian officials have made it clear to mediators that they do not want to repeat the mistakes of Gaza or Lebanon - where ceasefire agreements exist on paper but can be broken by the US and Israel at any time.
Mediators warned: 48 hours may be the final window
Mediators are highly concerned about the destructive consequences of US and Israeli retaliatory strikes on Iran's energy infrastructure and Iran's retaliatory strikes on the oil and water resources facilities of Gulf states.
Mediators have directly informed Iranian officials that there is no room for further delay in negotiations, and the next 48 hours are the last opportunity to reach an agreement and avoid massive destruction.
However, Iran's official stance remains tough, rejecting any form of concessions. The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Navy stated on Sunday that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz will "never" return to its pre-war state, especially with regard to the United States and Israel.
