Trump: Hopeful for reaching agreement with Iran, this Tuesday will be the "deadline"
On Sunday, Eastern Time, U.S. President Trump stated that the United States is in deep negotiations with Iran and may reach an agreement in the coming days; according to the White House, Trump's set deadline for the negotiations has been postponed from Monday night at 8 pm Eastern Time to Tuesday night at 8 pm; Trump threatened that if he cannot reach an agreement with Iranian leaders, he will destroy critical infrastructure vital to Iranian civilians.
On Sunday, President Trump told an interview that the United States is currently in "deep negotiations" with Iran and is hopeful of reaching an agreement before the deadline he set. This means that the deadline he previously set seems to have been pushed back again.
Early on Monday morning, international oil prices opened slightly higher and fluctuated repeatedly, with WTI crude oil prices rising 1.35% to $113.05 per barrel, and Brent crude oil rising 2% to $111.21 per barrel. Futures for the three major U.S. stock indices edged lower.
Hope to reach an agreement in the coming days
On Sunday, Trump stated in an interview that he believes it is "very likely" that an agreement will be reached with Iran on Monday (April 6). Trump said, "I think it's very likely tomorrow, they are negotiating now."
He added, "If they can't reach an agreement soon, I'm considering blowing everything up and then taking over the oil."
In the same interview, Trump said he has given negotiation representatives from Iran a "stay of execution" and stated that they have acknowledged that Iran will not continue to develop nuclear weapons.
"The most important thing is that they won't have nuclear weapons. They haven't negotiated on that, it was too easy," he said. "They have conceded on that. They have conceded on most things."
Trump also said in another interview that this conflict should be resolved "in a few days, not weeks," but warned that if no agreement is reached with Iran, there is "hardly anything" that the U.S. cannot do in terms of taking action.
Two sources said that the negotiations are being mediated by Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey, with communication between Trump's advisors and the Iranian Foreign Minister. Trump stated that envoys Whitkoff and his son-in-law Kushner are engaged in intensive negotiations with the Iranians.
Threats to strike power plants and bridges
Previously, Trump had threatened to destroy critical infrastructure for Iranian civilians if an agreement cannot be reached with Iranian leaders.
On Sunday, Trump posted a foul-mouthed message on his social media platforms, pledging to strike at Iran's power plants and bridges.
He vowed that if the Strait of Hormuz is not open to all ships by Tuesday (April 7), these "crazy bastards" will "go to hell."
"On Tuesday (April 7), it will be the day of Iran's power plants and bridges, one and the same. Absolute unprecedented!!!" Trump posted on Truth Social.
Later on Sunday, Trump posted a message on Truth Social saying, "Eastern Time 8 PM on Tuesday night (Beijing Time 8 AM on Wednesday morning)!", without providing an explanation. The White House revealed on Sunday that this date is now the deadline for Iran to reach an agreement with the U.S.
This is far from the first time Trump has threatened Iran's power plants in the past two weeks. On March 21, Trump posted on social media that if Iran does not "fully open" the strait within 48 hours, the U.S. will "destroy all their various power plants, starting with the largest one!"
On March 30, Trump claimed that negotiations to end the war were making "great progress." At the same time, he threatened that if an agreement cannot be reached and the Strait of Hormuz is not opened "immediately," the U.S. will destroy all of Iran's power plants and oil wells, as well as the major oil export hub of Khark Island in Iran, and "possibly destroy all" desalination plants.
On April 4, Trump again posted on social media, demanding that Iran reach an agreement with the U.S. by April 6 or open the Strait of Hormuz, stating "time is running out - there is only 48 hours left before disaster strikes." The "final deadline" he had set at that time was 8 PM Eastern Time on Monday (April 6), and according to his latest social media information, this "final deadline" has been pushed back to 8 PM Eastern Time on Tuesday (April 7).
