Apple Inc. (AAPL.US) announced on Thursday that it will stop selling the Mac Pro desktop computer, a high-end model aimed at video editors, photographers, and other professional users, officially exiting the stage of history.
The device, priced at $6999, has been removed from the Apple Inc. website. Since the introduction of the first version with the self-developed M2 Ultra chip in 2023, the model has not been updated, and with the smaller Mac Studio model upgrading to the M3 Ultra chip last year, the configuration of the Mac Pro has fallen far behind.
Due to overlapping functionality and processing capabilities with the lower-priced Mac Studio, the Mac Pro's position in Apple Inc.'s computer product line has become increasingly marginalized. The model has very low sales, and Apple Inc. has gradually cleared inventory in various retail channels in the past few weeks.
Earlier this month, Apple Inc. discontinued the Pro Display XDR monitor that was launched simultaneously with the latest Mac Pro in 2019, replacing it with a new Studio Display aimed at other Mac product lines.
Apple Inc. originally planned to gradually replace the Mac Pro with the Mac Studio, but due to opposition from some users, the plan has been postponed. These users prefer the larger chassis of the Mac Pro for the expandability of components such as network cards.
It is understood that Apple Inc. plans to launch an updated model of the Mac Studio with faster processors later this year. The Mac Pro was once the only device manufactured by Apple Inc. on American soil. However, Apple Inc. stated in February of this year that it will start assembling Mac minis at a factory in Houston later this year.
