The economic operation of the communication industry in the first two months of 2026
In the first two months, the communication industry operated steadily. The total volume of telecom services maintained growth, and the orderly progress of the construction of 5G, gigabit optical networks, and Internet of Things infrastructure continued. The scale of connected users continued to expand, and the growth momentum of mobile Internet access traffic continued to be rapid.
1. Overall operation
The total volume of telecom services maintained growth. In the first two months, the total revenue of telecom services reached 290.4 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 1.7%. Calculated at constant prices from the previous year, the total volume of telecom services increased by 8.4% year-on-year.
2. Development of telecom users
The scale of gigabit users continued to expand. As of the end of February, the total number of fixed broadband access users of the three basic telecom enterprises reached 694 million households, with a net increase of 3.167 million compared to the end of the previous year. Among them, the number of fixed broadband access users with a speed of 100Mbps and above reached 662 million households, accounting for 95.5% of the total number of users; the number of fixed broadband access users with a speed of 1000Mbps and above reached 245 million households, with a net increase of 6.37 million compared to the end of the previous year, accounting for 35.3% of the total number of users, an increase of 0.8 percentage points compared to the end of the previous year.
The number of 5G users continued to increase. As of the end of February, the total number of mobile phone users of the three basic telecom enterprises and China Radio and Television reached 1.826 billion households, a decrease of 1.01 million compared to the end of the previous year. Among them, the number of 5G mobile phone users reached 1.235 billion households, with a net increase of 30.44 million compared to the end of the previous year, accounting for 67.6% of mobile phone users.
The growth of mobile Internet of Things terminal users is fast, and Internet TV (IPTV, OTT) is steadily increasing. As of the end of February, the three basic telecom enterprises have developed 2.921 billion mobile Internet of Things terminal users, with a net increase of 33.08 million compared to the end of the previous year. The number of Internet TV (IPTV, OTT) users reached 410 million households, with a net increase of 1.73 million compared to the end of the previous year.
3. Use of telecom services
The growth rate of mobile Internet access traffic continues to increase. In the first two months, the cumulative mobile Internet traffic reached 66.67 billion GB, an increase of 20.4% year-on-year. As of the end of February, the number of mobile Internet users reached 1.603 billion households, a decrease of 6.786 million compared to the end of the previous year. The average monthly mobile Internet access traffic per household (DOU) in February reached 19.31GB/household per month, an increase of 16.1% year-on-year, and a decrease of 3.73GB/household per month compared to the end of the previous year.
The number of phone calls continues to decline. In the first two months, the total duration of outgoing mobile phone calls reached 303.6 billion minutes, a decrease of 5.6% year-on-year; the total duration of outgoing fixed phone calls reached 8.28 billion minutes, a decrease of 19.9% year-on-year. In the first two months, national mobile SMS business volume increased by 0.6% year-on-year; mobile SMS business revenue decreased by 16.2% year-on-year.
4. Communication capacity
The construction of gigabit fiber broadband networks continues to advance. As of the end of February, the total number of Internet broadband access ports in the country reached 1.26 billion, with a net increase of 9.011 million compared to the end of the previous year. Among them, fiber optic access (FTTH/O) ports reached 1.22 billion, with a net increase of 9.576 million compared to the end of the previous year, accounting for 96.8% of the Internet broadband access ports. As of the end of February, the number of 10G PON ports with the capability to provide gigabit network services reached 32 million, with a net increase of 376,000 compared to the end of the previous year.
The construction of 5G networks is steadily advancing. As of the end of February, the total number of 5G base stations reached 4.909 million, with a net increase of 70,000 compared to the end of the previous year, accounting for 38% of the total number of mobile base stations, an increase of 0.4 percentage points compared to the end of the previous year.
5. Regional development
The penetration rates of gigabit and 5G users in various regions continue to increase. As of the end of February, the penetration rates of 1000Mbps and above fixed broadband access users in the eastern, central, western, and northeastern regions were 35.1%, 35.1%, 37%, and 29.7% respectively, an increase of 0.5%, 1.2%, 0.9%, and 0.7% respectively compared to the end of the previous year; the number of 5G mobile phone users reached 531 million, 294 million, 324 million, and 85 million households in the regions, accounting for 67%, 68.4%, 67.7%, and 68.2% of the total number of mobile phone users in the respective regions, an increase of 1.5%, 1.9%, 1.8%, and 1.7% respectively compared to the end of the previous year.
The growth rates of mobile Internet access traffic in various regions have remained at double-digit levels. In the first two months, the mobile Internet access traffic in the eastern, central, western, and northeastern regions reached 28.52 billion GB, 15.38 billion GB, 18.95 billion GB, and 3.82 billion GB respectively, an increase of 22.2%, 18.8%, 18.4%, and 23.5% year-on-year.
