According to data from the Statistics and Census Service of Macao, the composite consumer price index in January 2026 increased by 0.54% year-on-year and by 0.02% month-on-month.
According to data from the Statistics and Census Service of Macao, in January 2026, the composite consumer price index (CPI) increased by 0.54% year-on-year and by 0.02% month-on-month. Over the twelve months leading up to January of this year, the average CPI rose by 0.33% compared to the same period a year ago (from February 2024 to January 2025). Compared to January 2025, the price index for food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 0.85% in January, mainly driven by higher dining out and takeaway charges, as well as rent adjustments, leading to a 0.38% increase in the housing and fuel category. The largest increases in annual growth were seen in miscellaneous goods and services (+2.32%) and tobacco and alcohol (+2.21%). On the other hand, the price indices for recreation, sports, and culture (-2.06%) and transportation (-0.93%) decreased. The CPI for Class A and Class B items increased by 0.58% and 0.51% respectively year-on-year. Compared to December 2025, the composite CPI increased by 0.02% in January. The price index for food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 0.13% month-on-month, driven by higher dining out and takeaway charges, as well as increased prices for fruits, fresh fish, and seafood, partially offset by a decrease in vegetable prices. The price indices for tobacco and alcohol (+0.78%) and miscellaneous goods and services (+0.50%) increased monthly, while price increases in electricity also contributed to a 0.24% increase in the housing and fuel category. Conversely, the price indices for recreation, sports, and culture (-1.24%) and transportation (-1.11%) decreased. The CPI for Class A items increased by 0.08% month-on-month, while Class B items decreased by 0.02%. Over the twelve months leading up to January of this year, the average CPI rose by 0.33% compared to the same period a year ago. Among the different categories, the largest price increases were seen in miscellaneous goods and services (+1.82%), recreation, sports, and culture (+1.39%), and education (+1.39%), while the price indices for information and communication (-2.57%) and clothing and footwear (-1.64%) decreased. The average CPI for Class A and Class B items increased by 0.29% and 0.36% respectively. The Statistics and Census Service of Macao has compiled three series of CPIs to reflect the impact of changes in prices of goods/services on households with different expenditure groups. Class A and Class B CPIs cover approximately 50% and 30% of households, with monthly average expenditures ranging from MOP 11,000 to MOP 35,999 and MOP 36,000 to MOP 71,999 respectively, while the composite CPI covers all households, with housing and fuel, food and non-alcoholic beverages, and transportation categories accounting for a higher proportion of household expenditures, with weights of 34.47, 29.47, and 8.33 respectively.
