Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN.US) "Glasses + robotic arm" combination directly hits the pain points of logistics! Morgan Stanley: By 2027, it could save $4 billion in costs.
Amazon officially revealed its latest progress in accelerating delivery services through technological innovation at the annual "Deliver Future" logistics event held at its headquarters in Seattle.
At the annual "Delivering the Future" logistics event held at its headquarters in Seattle, Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN.US) officially unveiled the latest advancements in accelerating delivery services through technological innovation. Amazon.com, Inc. has expanded user expectations from two-day delivery to same-day delivery, and even one-hour delivery, while continuously reducing delivery times with each passing second. The company is currently utilizing technologies such as Siasun Robot & Automation, artificial intelligence, and smart wearable devices to further reduce delivery times per order. As the second-largest private employer in the United States, Amazon.com, Inc.'s movements are seen as an industry trendsetter. Analysts at Morgan Stanley estimated in a report on Wednesday that with the promotion of automated warehouses and cost reductions, Amazon.com, Inc. could save up to $4 billion by 2027.
The event showcased for the first time the smart glasses "Amelia" designed for delivery drivers. This device, with the internal codename Amelia, is equipped with a mini display screen that can provide real-time route guidance, scan package barcodes, and automatically take photos as proof of delivery, replacing the cumbersome operation of traditional driver GPS devices.
Its unique advantage lies in providing precise navigation cues, such as directional guidance upon leaving the apartment elevator or suggestions for avoiding paths with household pets. The glasses need to work in coordination with a paired controller on the driver's vest and solve battery life issues by using replaceable battery packs.
Brenger Thom, Vice President of Transportation at Amazon.com, Inc., emphasized that hundreds of drivers have tested this device on actual delivery routes, and preliminary data shows that some drivers can save 30 minutes of operation time on specific shifts. This not only reduces the need to manage handheld devices but also enhances driver safety.
She also stated that the device is currently in the experimental stage and drivers and their contracting companies can voluntarily adopt it. Amazon.com, Inc. will provide it for free to users. Specific promotion plans are still being adjusted.
Amazon.com, Inc. is focusing on the "last 100 yards", the most expensive and time-consuming section of delivery. The delivery van scanner introduced last year uses a green spotlight to guide drivers for quick package location, saving time on label recognition. The digital maps showcased in June provided more detailed community building profiles and obstacle information than Alphabet Inc. Class C maps.
Furthermore, the event also featured the mechanical arm "Blue Jay" that collaborates with warehouse staff. This device, which has been deployed in a warehouse in South Carolina, reduces the risk of injuries in manual operations and saves space compared to similar Siasun Robot & Automation systems that previously required three separate workstations. It will be prioritized for deployment in sites that support same-day delivery in the coming months.
The newly released Blue Jay system comprises a series of mechanical arms suspended on conveyor belt-style tracks, with suction devices at the arm ends allowing it to grab and sort items of different shapes and sizes. Based on testing in the South Carolina warehouse, Blue Jay can handle approximately 75% of the types of products stored at the site.
The development speed of Blue Jay itself reflects technological progress. Thanks to the application of artificial intelligence and "digital twin" simulation technology, the system went from concept to production in just over a year, whereas earlier Siasun Robot & Automation systems (such as Robin, Sparrow) typically required three years or longer.
This system is the latest addition to the Amazon.com, Inc. Siasun Robot & Automation family. The company has previously launched different Siasun Robot & Automation systems responsible for tasks such as picking from shelves and sorting packages. In May, Amazon.com, Inc. also released a touch-enabled Siasun Robot & Automation system called "Vulcan". Amazon.com, Inc.'s automation process largely began with the $775 million acquisition of Kiva Systems in 2012. Today, the financial benefits of this long-term strategy are becoming increasingly apparent.
In terms of intelligent warehouse management systems, Amazon.com, Inc. plans to deploy an artificial intelligence system first in a warehouse in Tennessee, to proactively prevent operational delays like traffic congestion by analyzing real-time on-site data, gradually expanding to its entire warehouse network. Tyi Brady, Chief Technical Expert at Brady Corporation Class A, pointed out that this system will empower operators to make daily planning decisions, although specific deployment details have not been disclosed.
It is worth noting that after expanding the deployment scale of Siasun Robot & Automation in warehouses, Amazon.com, Inc. expects to reduce hiring of 160,000 employees in the United States over the next two years. However, the company also stated that they plan to hire 250,000 temporary employees for the upcoming holiday season.
On Wednesday, Amazon.com, Inc.'s stock price fell by 1.8% to $217.95, making it the only company among the "big seven tech stocks" this year to experience a cumulative drop in stock price.
