Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN.US) Cloud service (AWS) experienced a widespread outage on Monday morning US East Coast time, resulting in damage to services for multiple companies, including the artificial intelligence company Perplexity, as well as the financial platforms Coinbase (COIN.US) and Robinhood (HOOD.US). Coinbase and Robinhood stated that the AWS outage is affecting their services. Perplexity stated that the interruption has affected the stability of its website.
As the world's most popular cloud service provider, AWS supports much of the internet's infrastructure, holding approximately one-third of the global cloud market share, so any downtime event could potentially trigger a chain reaction. AWS stated on the AWS Health Dashboard that they discovered issues with gateways in the US East Coast region and are "accelerating recovery through multiple parallel paths." According to Downdetector data, user complaints began to surge after 7:30 am London time, with reports reaching thousands.
This AWS outage is the first major internet outage event since last year's CrowdStrike system failure. Last year's CrowdStrike failure resulted in global hospitals, banks, and airport technology systems going down.
Additionally, affected gaming platforms include Epic Games' Fortnite, Roblox (RBLX.US), Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans. Affected financial service platforms include Venmo under Paypal (PYPL.US), as well as Chime (CHYM.US). The app for US ride-sharing service Lyft (LYFT.US) also experienced an outage, with thousands of users unable to use it. The president of the communication app Signal, Meredith Whittaker, confirmed on social media that their platform was affected by the AWS outage.
British businesses were also affected. According to Downdetector UK site data, UK companies Lloyds Banking Group plc Sponsored ADR (LYG.US), Scottish Bank, telecommunications service provider Vodafone Group Plc Sponsored ADR (VOD.US), and BT all reported service issues. The website of the British tax, payment, and customs agency HMRC was also affected by the outage.
However, the owner of the social media company X, billionaire Elon Musk, stated that their platform was still operating normally. He stated, "X is operating normally," but did not provide further details.
It is reported that Amazon.com, Inc. also experienced issues with their own services on Monday, including an increase in user complaints for Alexa voice assistant and Ring home security system users. An Amazon.com, Inc. spokesperson stated that the company is still investigating the cause of the outage. As of the time of writing, Amazon.com, Inc. was slightly down by 0.21% in pre-market trading on Monday.
