The China Automobile Dealers Association released the "August 2025 Pickup Manufacturer Wholesale Sales Ranking Report". In August 2025, the pickup market sold 40,000 units, a year-on-year decrease of 0.3% and a month-on-month decrease of 3.0%, still remaining at a relatively high level in the past five years. From January to August 2025, the pickup market sold 387,000 units, an increase of 12.7% compared to the same period last year. Great Wall Motor continues to maintain a strong leading position in the pickup market, with stable performance both domestically and internationally. Due to the continuous growth in exports, Great Wall Motor, SAIC Datong, Zhengzhou Nissan, Chongqing Changan Automobile, and Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp., Ltd. have shown strong performance.
In the domestic pickup retail market, Great Wall Motor, Jiangling Motors Corporation, Zhengzhou Nissan, Jiangxi Isuzu, and others have performed well, maintaining the domestic "one super, three strong" pickup market pattern. The main areas for pickup demand are in the southwest and northwest, with a greater demand for pickups in the western region. In August 2025, the pickup demand in the southwest and northwest regions accounted for 45% of the total demand, becoming the demand in the two core markets. With the slowdown in the high growth rate of new energy pickups, the new energy-assisted pickup market is weaker compared to the trend of logistics-type electric vehicles.
Pickup exports: In 2024, total pickup exports in China reached 244,000 units, an increase of 85%. This year, led by Great Wall Motor, the overall pickup industry exports have been strong. In August 2025, pickup exports reached 21,000 units, a 3% year-on-year increase but a 9% decrease from the previous month. Pickup exports continue to account for a high proportion, with a total of 202,000 units exported from January to August, a 32% increase compared to last year. In 2024, pickup exports accounted for 45% of total sales, increasing to 53% in August 2025 and reaching 55% from January to August 2025, showing a rapid increase in China's independent pickup exports. As an internationalized vehicle type, pickups have become the strongest category in China's commercial vehicle exports.
New energy pickups: In 2024, Shanxi Guoxin Energy Corporation sold 21,200 units of new energy pickups, a 170% year-on-year increase. In August 2025, new energy pickup sales reached 3,000 units, a 68% year-on-year increase but a 20% decrease from the previous month. Cumulatively from January to August, new energy pickups reached 49,000 units, a 536% increase year-on-year, showing a better trend than fuel pickups. Electrification is the best way for commercial vehicles to gain road rights. With the development of electrification and passengerization, the survival space of the pickup market is gradually improving.
New energy pickup sales in August: Great Wall Rivian electric pickup sold 1,221 units, BYD Company Limited pickups sold 861 units, Changan extended-range pickups sold 710 units, and Zhengzhou Nissan sold 540 units. Other pickup companies also have a certain scale of new energy vehicles. With the start and gradual cultivation of the domestic new energy pickup market, it is expected that China's pickup market will develop faster in the future to meet domestic and international demands. Note: This data is based on the China Automobile Dealers Association's monthly report on sales information for commercial vehicles (Final Draft).
