The current trend index for business income of small and medium enterprises in Hong Kong in August has risen to 42.3, indicating a slight improvement in the business atmosphere.
The government spokesman stated that the business atmosphere of small and medium-sized enterprises in mid-August and their expectations for the next month have both improved slightly. The overall employment situation has also shown signs of improvement.
On September 9, the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released the results of the monthly survey on the business conditions of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in August 2025. The current trend index of business revenue of SMEs slightly increased from 42.1 in July 2025 to 42.3 in August 2025, while the business revenue outlook index for the next month (September 2025) is 45.7.
By industry analysis, although the current trend index of business revenue is below the threshold of 50, some related indices for the industries covered in the survey increased in August 2025 compared to the previous month, including the retail industry (from 39.3 to 41.1) and the wholesale industry (from 40.4 to 41.3).
The current trend index of new orders in the import and export trade industry decreased from 45.0 in July 2025 to 44.2 in August 2025, while the outlook index for new orders for the next month (September 2025) is 47.0.
A government spokesperson stated that the business sentiment of SMEs in August and their expectations for the next month have slightly improved. Overall employment situation has also shown improvement.
Looking ahead, uncertainties in the external environment will continue to affect the local business sentiment. Despite this, the local economy is robust, and with steady economic growth in Asia, especially in the mainland, support is expected. The government will continue to closely monitor the situation.
