On Monday, the spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Iran and the United States have not yet reached a consensus on the time, date, or location for restarting stalled nuclear negotiations.
The spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, said during a television press conference that Iran will not return to the negotiating table "unless we are certain that the negotiations will be effective."
This statement came in response to a report from the Fars News Agency over the weekend. The report revealed that President Mahmoud Pezeshkian was lightly injured in the leg during an Israeli air strike on June 16, which abruptly halted the five rounds of talks between the US and Iran.
According to Fars, the attack targeted the entrance of a building in western Tehran where the president was meeting with officials from the judiciary and legislative branches. Authorities are investigating whether there was a leak of intelligence regarding the operation.
Over the weekend, Iranian Foreign Minister and chief negotiator Abbas Araghchi said that if negotiations resume, the Islamic Republic would request guarantees against future attacks and revealed that they have received "certain assurances." Baghaei also mentioned that negotiations with the three European countries of the UK, France, and Germany are under consideration. These three original signatories to the nuclear deal had been maintaining parallel dialogue channels with Iran before the Israeli military strike last month.
Baghaei added that Russia and China have expressed willingness to play a role in resolving the Iranian nuclear dispute, but did not provide more details. He also stated that experts are assessing the damage to the Fordow nuclear facility, which was previously targeted by a US military strike, with Iranian officials describing it as "severely damaged."
