The "Big Beautiful" bill's July 4th deadline is at risk of falling through! House hardliners challenge Trump, tax reform legislation on the brink of deadlock.
Andy Harris, chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, doubts whether President Donald Trump's tax and spending bill can be completed before July 4th.
On Wednesday, the hardline conservative leader of the House Republican Caucus expressed doubts about whether President Trump's massive tax and spending bill could be passed into law by July 4th.
"We may need another week to perfect the bill," said Andy Harris, the Maryland Republican and chairman of the Freedom Caucus. "We are willing to stay until the issue is resolved."
He added, "I don't think we'll be ready by July 4th," and criticized the Senate for not staying in session after passing its own version of the bill on Tuesday.
As Harris made these comments, House leadership was planning a procedural vote on Wednesday to push the bill through, with the goal of getting it to the President's desk by Friday.
However, a government official said that Trump is determined to see the bill pass before Independence Day, and plans to meet with members of the Freedom Caucus and other House Republicans on Wednesday at the White House.
House Speaker Johnson is planning a procedural vote on Wednesday to advance the bill, aiming to submit it to the President by Friday.
But this aggressive timeline is facing strong opposition - moderate and far-right Republican members are threatening to defy the President's wishes, potentially derailing the domestic agenda.
Upon returning to Washington after the holiday, members of the House will vote on the Senate version of the bill on Wednesday. The Senate version narrowly passed on Tuesday with Vice President JD Wans casting the tie-breaking vote of 51-50.
Texas Congressman Chip Roy and South Carolina Congressman Ralph Norman predicted on Wednesday that the first procedural vote will fail, meaning the House may not reach a final vote as scheduled.
In the evenly divided House, Speaker Mike Johnson can only afford a limited number of Republican defections.
"The House has its position, the Senate has its position, and now we need to find a compromise to form the final version that can be submitted to the President," Harris emphasized.
The focus of his questioning is on how the Senate version of the bill will exacerbate the budget deficit: "This is not rebellion, but a request to follow the legal legislative process."
On Tuesday, Trump pressured Republicans through Truth Social, saying that the tax reform bill could only pass "on the condition that House Republicans unite and ignore those who occasionally seek attention (you know who you are!)."
