On the news front, according to the official WeChat account of AIRDOC-B, a team of researchers from the Eagle Eye Airdoc-Monash Joint Laboratory recently developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) driven algorithm tool called PanDerm, which can analyze multiple imaging types simultaneously, enabling faster and more accurate detection of melanoma and a range of other skin diseases. This research has been officially published in the top international medical journal "Nature
Medicine." PanDerm is one of the first AI models specifically designed to assist in real-world dermatological medical practices by analyzing multiple types of images, including close-up photos, skin lesion scans, pathological slides, and full-body photos.
The study shows that doctors using PanDerm can increase the accuracy of skin cancer diagnosis by 11%. The model also helps healthcare professionals who are not dermatologists improve the accuracy of diagnosing various other skin diseases by 16.5%. PanDerm also demonstrates the ability to detect skin cancer at an early stage, identifying early lesions of skin cancer before they are detected by clinical doctors. The development of the PanDerm model is based on data from 11 institutions in multiple countries, involving four types of medical images, with the training data consisting of over 2 million skin images.
