Hong Kong's Business Environment Council stated that the EU’s anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese biodiesel, imposed in August 2024, have opened a new opportunity for local renewable fuel adoption. Over 90% of Hong Kong’s biodiesel is currently exported

June 9, 2025 — According to the South China Morning Post, the Business Environment Council has stated that the European Union’s imposition of high anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese biodiesel imports—introduced in August 2024—could serve as a pivotal moment for Hong Kong to accelerate domestic adoption of renewable fuels. Currently, over 90% of Hong Kong’s biodiesel output is exported. However, the new trade restrictions have prompted local producers to redirect supply toward internal consumption, notably for sectors such as construction equipment.

This shift aligns with the city's broader decarbonization objectives under its Climate Action Plan 2050 and complements its commitment to the ESG disclosure guidelines set forth by the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The development also resonates with the EU’s Fit for 55 climate package, which aims to ensure a 55% emissions reduction by 2030 and has influenced global sustainability benchmarks. By capitalizing on redirected supply and leveraging the momentum of international ESG frameworks, Hong Kong has the opportunity to enhance energy resilience while reducing its carbon footprint.
