On February 26, data from the Macao Statistics and Census Bureau showed that in January 2025, the total external merchandise trade of Macao amounted to 11.9 billion patacas (MOP), a decrease of 11.2% compared to the same month in 2024 when it was 13.4 billion patacas. The total value of goods exports (1.13 billion patacas) increased by 0.3% year-on-year, while the total value of imports fell by 12.2% to 10.77 billion patacas. The trade deficit in January was 9.64 billion patacas.
Compared to the same month in 2024, the value of re-exports in January (1 billion patacas) increased by 1.7%, with perfumes and alcoholic beverages increasing by 2.1 times and 90.8% respectively, while products for entertainment venues and watches decreased by 29.6% and 15.3%. The export of local products (0.13 billion patacas) decreased by 9.5%, with bakery products, pharmaceuticals, and organic chemical products reducing by 41.0% and 24.8% respectively, while clothing, copper, and its products increased by 30.2% and 12.3%.
In terms of destination country, the value of exports to China's Hong Kong (0.84 billion patacas), the European Union (26.45 million patacas), and Belt and Road countries (26.32 million patacas) in January increased by 3.8%, 15.9%, and 16.0% respectively, while exports to mainland China (52.24 million patacas) and the United States (24.87 million patacas) decreased by 32.3% and 11.7%. In terms of goods classification, the export of textiles and clothing increased by 15.5% to 0.12 billion patacas, while non-textile goods decreased by 1.3% to 1.01 billion patacas.
The total value of goods imports decreased by 12.2% year-on-year. By the origin of goods, the value of goods from the European Union (3.46 billion patacas), mainland China (3.20 billion patacas), and Belt and Road countries (2.43 billion patacas) in January all decreased by 9.3%, 11.7%, and 8.7% respectively, while goods from Japan (0.69 billion patacas) increased by 3.0%. In terms of the source of goods, the value of imports from mainland China (1.61 billion patacas) decreased by 20.0%, while imports from Hong Kong (8.64 billion patacas) also decreased by 10.3%. In terms of goods classification, the import of consumer goods decreased by 9.6% to 8.29 billion patacas, with food and beverages, clothing and footwear, as well as gold jewelry decreasing by 4.6%, 10.9%, and 3.0% respectively. The import value of fuels and lubricants increased by 8.2% to 0.6 billion patacas, while mobile phones (0.22 billion patacas) and building materials (0.13 billion patacas) recorded declines of 44.9% and 53.7% respectively.
