On February 24th, TechInsights reported that Sony had its strongest holiday sales season yet, with the PlayStation 5 reaching its highest shipment volume since its release in 2020, totaling 9.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2024. This is only 200,000 units less than the peak sales of the PlayStation 4 when the PlayStation 4 Pro was launched in the fourth quarter of 2016.

After surpassing 45 million units in sales in 2023, the shipment volume of gaming consoles in 2024 showed a downward trend, mainly due to a decline in Nintendo's shipments. Nintendo's popular gaming console, the Switch, has been on the market for 8 years and is planning to launch the highly anticipated upgraded version, Switch 2, in the coming months. The shipment volumes of Microsoft Corporation's (MSFT.US) Xbox series and Sony's (SONY.US) PlayStation 5 also saw a year-on-year decline. However, in the fourth quarter of 2024, thanks to the launch of PlayStation 5 Pro, PlayStation 5 achieved its highest quarterly shipment volume since its release in 2020.
As the most expensive gaming console introduced by Sony, the PlayStation 5 Pro is clearly aimed at gaming enthusiasts who seek superior performance. While mid-generation upgrades may not be as exciting as the release of a new generation of gaming consoles, they can still deliver value to gamers and provide a boost in shipment volume during a decline phase.
