According to data from the Statistics and Census Bureau of Macau, a total of 4,555 new companies were established in 2024, a decrease of 456 compared to the previous year. The total registered capital decreased by 37.5% to 1.03 billion Macau patacas. There were 1,098 companies dissolved during the year, with a total capital of 450 million patacas. The net increase in the number of companies was 3,457, a decrease of 636 compared to the previous year.
Of the new companies established in 2024, 1,509 were in the wholesale and retail industry, while 1,322 were in the business services industry. In terms of capital, 3,150 companies had registered capital of less than 50,000 patacas, accounting for 69.2% of the total number, with a corresponding capital amount of 81.4 million patacas accounting for 7.9% of the total capital. There were 84 new companies with registered capital of 1 million patacas or more, with a total capital amount of 750 million patacas, accounting for 73.2% of the total capital.
In terms of quarterly statistics, in the fourth quarter of 2024, there were 1,125 new companies established, a decrease of 9 compared to the third quarter, while the registered capital increased by 64.8% to 420 million patacas. This was mainly due to several new companies in the urban cleaning and garbage collection and disposal services industry with relatively large capital amounts being established during the quarter. There were 271 companies dissolved in the same quarter, with a total capital of 200 million patacas. The net increase in the number of companies decreased by 46 compared to the previous quarter, to 854.
In terms of the sources of funding, in the fourth quarter of 2024, the registered capital of new companies came from Mainland China (170 million patacas), Macau (130 million patacas) and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (120 million patacas), accounting for 39.6%, 31.5%, and 28.3% respectively. The funding from Mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area totaled 21.35 million patacas, with Zhuhai accounting for 55.3%.
