Alphabet Inc. Class C (GOOGL.US) CEO Sundar Pichai stated that "practical" quantum computers will be achieved within 5 to 10 years, comparing this breakthrough technology to the development of artificial intelligence about a decade ago.
Pichai, speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai, said, "The current state of quantum computing reminds me of artificial intelligence in the 2010s when we were developing Alphabet Inc. Class C's brain and making initial progress."
With the leadership of the United States and China, governments and companies around the world have committed billions of dollars to quantum computing research in pursuit of this future technology. Quantum computers can significantly improve the speed and capacity of data processing, making it possible to simulate complex systems, predict outcomes in different scenarios more accurately, and even break current encryption systems.
However, the technology is currently mainly used in research, and there is still controversy over when it will truly mature. In January of this year, NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) CEO Jensen Huang stated that a "highly practical" quantum computer may still take decades to emerge, causing a significant drop in quantum computing-related stocks.
Pichai also mentioned a recent breakthrough in quantum chips at Alphabet Inc. Class C, which allows researchers to solve problems in 5 minutes that existing supercomputers would take "longer than the age of the universe" to solve.
"The progress in quantum computing is indeed exciting," he said.
