In December, the exchange fund's overseas assets decreased by 28.1 billion Hong Kong dollars to 3,478.3 billion Hong Kong dollars. The currency base was 1,957.6 billion Hong Kong dollars, including promissory notes, government-issued circulating banknotes and coins, bank system balances, and issued exchange fund notes and bonds. The exchange fund's total claims on the Hong Kong private sector were 305.7 billion Hong Kong dollars. Total external liabilities amounted to 24.3 billion Hong Kong dollars.
