The current trend index of business income for small and medium enterprises in Hong Kong in December has risen to 43.9.

The Hong Kong government Census and Statistics Department today released the results of the monthly survey on the business conditions of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in December 2024. The current trend index of business revenue for Hong Kong SMEs increased from 41.9 in November 2024 in the contraction zone to 43.9 in December 2024, while the business revenue outlook trend index for the next month (January 2025) was 47.0. By industry analysis, the current trend index of business revenue for most industries covered in the survey increased in December 2024 compared to the previous month, especially in the import and export trade sector (from 43.1 to 45.7), retail industry (from 37.7 to 40.2), and commercial services industry (from 45.9 to 48.4). The current trend index of new orders for the import and export trade sector increased from 45.1 in November 2024 to 46.5 in December 2024, while the new order outlook trend index for the next month (January 2025) was 48.0. Commentary A spokesperson for the Hong Kong government stated that the overall business sentiment of SMEs improved in December, with most industries surveyed showing an increase in the current trend index. SMEs also have a more positive outlook for their business situation in the next month. Meanwhile, the overall employment situation has improved. The spokesperson added that the country has introduced various measures to boost the mainland economy and provide benefits to Hong Kong, along with the Hong Kong SAR government's initiatives to boost the local market. However, uncertainties in the global economy, particularly the escalating trade tensions, may add pressure to the business environment. The government will closely monitor the situation.
