Macau: The overall unemployment rate from September to November was 1.7%.
Data from the Statistics and Census Service of Macao shows that the overall unemployment rate (1.7%) and the unemployment rate among the local residents (2.3%) in Macao for September to November 2024 remained the same as the previous period (August to October).
According to data from the Statistics and Census Bureau of Macao, the overall unemployment rate (1.7%) and the unemployment rate of local residents (2.3%) from September to November 2024 remained the same as the previous period (August to October); however, the underemployment rate increased by 0.3 percentage points to 1.5%.
The labor force in Macao (386,000 people) and the employed population (379,300 people) both increased by 1,800 people compared to the previous period, with the number of local employed residents (287,300 people) also increasing by 800 people. By industry, the number of employed people in the gaming and financial industries increased, while the hotel and catering industry saw a decrease.
The number of unemployed in Macao (6,700 people) remained the same as the previous period. Among the unemployed looking for new jobs, a majority were previously employed in the gaming and retail industries. On the other hand, the proportion of new labor force seeking their first job decreased by 3.6 percentage points to 14.6% of the total unemployed.
The number of underemployed (5,800 people) increased by 1,100 people compared to the previous period, with a majority coming from the real estate and business services industry and the transportation and storage industry.
Compared to the same period last year, the labor force participation rate (68.0%) and the unemployment rate (1.7%) in Macao both decreased by 0.4 and 0.6 percentage points, respectively, while the underemployment rate (1.5%) increased by 0.1 percentage points.
The scope of the employment survey includes all residential units in the Macao Peninsula, Taipa, and Coloane, but excludes collective living units such as school dormitories and nursing homes; the survey only covers individuals living in these units, excluding Macao residents working overseas or foreign employees. Based on immigration data, it is estimated that there are approximately 104,600 Macao residents and foreign employees working in Macao but living overseas during the reference period; when including these individuals, the total labor force (490,600 people) increased by 2,600 people compared to the previous period.
