On November 19, the Statistics and Census Bureau of Macau released the 2023 cultural industry statistics. The service revenue (23.5 billion yuan) and value-added total (7.6 billion yuan) in the "cultural performance" field have increased significantly compared to the previous year, with growth rates exceeding 214.6% and 187.7% respectively. The share of overall service revenue has also increased by 14.3 percentage points to 27.0%. In the "art collection" field (1.4% share), the service revenue (1.3 billion yuan) recorded an increase of 85.1%, driven mainly by art sales, while the value-added total (19.17 million yuan) decreased by 12.8% due to increased purchase and operating expenses.
According to data from the Statistics and Census Bureau of Macau, there were a total of 2,866 operating institutions in the cultural industry in 2023, comprised of the four areas of "digital media," "creative design," "cultural performance," and "art collection". This marks an increase of 112 institutions compared to the previous year, with a 15.3% increase in employees (13,976 people). With the continued promotion of the cultural industry by the SAR government and the gradual recovery of the local economy, the overall service revenue has increased significantly by 47.9% to 87.2 billion yuan, a nearly 10.0% increase from 2019 (79.3 billion yuan). The value-added total reflecting the industry's contribution to the overall economy has also risen by 24.5% to 29.0 billion yuan.
Significant increases in service revenue were seen in all sectors of the cultural industry in 2023, with the "digital media" sector accounting for the largest share (43.3%). The annual service revenue increased by 23.0% to 37.8 billion yuan, while the value-added total (12.9 billion yuan) decreased by 4.8%, mainly due to rising operating costs. The "creative design" sector accounted for 28.3% of the revenue, with total service revenue (24.7 billion yuan) increasing by 22.6%, and the "design to production/distribution" involving Macau brands seeing a significant increase of 77.7% to 37.13 million yuan. The value-added total in the "creative design" sector reached 8.4 billion yuan, an increase of 21.2% from the previous year.
