According to reports, debt-ridden Boeing Company (BA.US) has issued layoff notices to more than 400 members of its professional aviation union as part of a larger scale layoff plan due to ongoing financial challenges. Last week, members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) reportedly received layoff notices, with the layoffs expected to take effect officially in mid-January next year.
Boeing Company announced in October its plans to lay off 10%, or about 17,000 people, in the coming months. CEO Kelly Ortberg told employees that the company must "right-size our workforce to fit our financial reality."
SPEEA union said on Thursday that the layoffs affected 438 of its members. The local chapter of the union reportedly represents 17,000 Boeing Company employees, primarily based in Washington state, with some also in Oregon, California, and Utah.
In September, 33,000 union workers went on strike, and Boeing Company also halted the holiday of several employees and ceased production of its best-selling 737 Max and other jetliners.
