Data released by Canalys shows that in the third quarter of 2024, global AI PC shipments reached 13.3 million units, accounting for 20% of total PC shipments in the quarter. AI PCs refer to desktops and laptops equipped with chipset or modules specifically designed for AI workloads, such as NPUs. With the increasing supply of such devices, AI PC shipments grew by 49% continuously.
Windows devices for the first time accounted for the majority of AI functional PC shipments, with a market share of 53%.
Despite the continued push for AI PC adoption through Windows 11 updates and processor roadmaps, a key future challenge will be persuading customers to prepare proactively for upcoming edge AI applications.
Canalys' November channel partner survey showed that 31% of partners do not plan to sell Copilot+ PCs in 2025, with a further 34% expecting these devices to account for less than 10% of their PC sales next year.
With the end of Windows 10 support looming, the next few quarters will be crucial opportunities to drive the upgrade of a large number of old devices to AI PCs.
