Noticed, the Republican Party led by US President-elect Trump is getting closer to winning the majority of seats in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, thereby fully controlling Congress, which will give Trump the power to advance his agenda after returning to the White House in January next year.
According to the Associated Press, the Republican Party has won another election and has secured at least 216 seats, just one step away from the 218 seats needed to obtain the majority. The Democratic Party has won 207 seats, with 12 elections still undecided.
Edison Research predicts that on Tuesday, Republican Congressman David Valadao from California and Democratic Congressman Mike Levin will be re-elected.
The Republican Party already holds at least 52 out of 100 seats in the US Senate, with the election results in Pennsylvania still pending. The Associated Press and some other US media predicted last week that Republican David McConkie defeated Democratic incumbent Bob Casey in Pennsylvania.
The Senate majority has not reached the 60-vote threshold required to pass most legislation, which means that even if the Republican Party wins the majority in the House of Representatives, the Democrats will still have some influence in Washington next year.
But if the Republicans control the House of Representatives, they will have extensive power and could push for a broad agenda including tax cuts, spending cuts, relaxed energy regulations, and border security controls.
The remaining 12 House of Representatives elections are mostly in highly competitive districts in the western states, where the vote counting is usually slower than in other parts of the country.
Republican senators will meet on Wednesday to decide who will serve as Senate leader in 2025, with John Thune, John Cornyn, and Rick Scott vying for the position vacated by Senator Mitch McConnell.
