The Kremlin in Russia denied the media reports about a phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect, soon-to-be White House returnee Donald Trump.
Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday, "These news are completely untrue, purely fictional."We have not had a dialogue."
According to reports, The Washington Post had earlier reported that Putin and US President-elect Trump had a brief conversation last Thursday and discussed goals for peace in Europe, citing informed sources, but not disclosing specific identities. The report also mentioned that Trump advised the Russian leader not to escalate the conflict in Ukraine and reminded him of the significant military presence of the US in Europe.
Peskov told reporters that there are no specific plans for formal contact between Putin and Trump, just as the Russian president mentioned at the Valdai Discussion Club annual meeting in Sochi last Thursday.
Trump has mentioned several times in public events this year that if he wins the US presidential election in 2024, he is confident in quickly resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict that began in 2022. He has mentioned having a good relationship with Ukrainian President Zelensky and Russian President Putin, believing he can find a solution that is "good and beneficial for both sides." He even claimed that if elected, he can quickly formulate an agreement that benefits both sides.
Putin recently stated that he is willing to restore contact with leaders of Western countries if they show initiative.
