Macau's comprehensive consumer price index in August rose by 0.74% compared to the same period last year.

According to data from the Statistics and Census Bureau of Macao, the composite Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August 2024 increased by 0.74% compared to the previous year, a decrease of 0.08 percentage points from July (+0.82%). Among the major categories of price indices, the categories of education (+5.03%), miscellaneous goods and services (+2.57%), and medical care (+2.05%) saw the largest annual increases. The categories of food and non-alcoholic beverages (+0.90%) and housing and fuel (+0.81%) also saw increases, mainly due to the rise in dining out charges and vegetable prices, as well as increases in rent and gas charges. On the other hand, the categories of transportation (-3.11%) and household equipment and services (-0.36%) saw price index decreases. The Class A and Class B CPIs also increased by 0.74% annually. Compared to July, the composite CPI in August fell by 0.04%. The prices of clothing and footwear (-0.93%), transportation (-0.18%), and tobacco and alcohol (-0.16%) all saw decreases. The prices of fresh fish, fruits, and fresh/frozen poultry decreased, leading to a decrease in the food and non-alcoholic beverages category (-0.08%). On the other hand, leisure and culture (+0.88%) and medical care (+0.05%) categories saw increases. The Class A and Class B CPIs fell by 0.04% and 0.05%, respectively. In the twelve months up to August of this year, the average composite CPI rose by 1.00% compared to the same period a year ago, with the largest increases seen in the categories of education (+5.04%), leisure and culture (+4.23%), and clothing and footwear (+3.46%), while transportation (-3.01%) decreased. The average Class A and Class B CPIs increased by 0.91% and 1.12%, respectively. The average composite CPI for the first eight months of this year increased by 0.93% annually, with the average Class A and Class B CPIs increasing by 0.87% and 1.01%, respectively. The Statistics and Census Bureau of Macao has compiled three series of CPIs to reflect the impact of changes in prices of goods/services on households with different expenditure groups; Class A and Class B CPIs cover approximately 50% and 30% of households, with average monthly expenditures ranging from 12,000 to 35,999 Macao Patacas and 36,000 to 62,999 Macao Patacas. The composite CPI covers all households, with housing and fuel, food and non-alcoholic beverages, and transportation categories accounting for a higher proportion of household expenditures, with weights of 33.75, 27.94, and 7.84, respectively.
