U.S. Treasury Fine-Tunes Debt Issuance Guidance, Hinting at Possible Changes to Auction Sizes in the Future

The U.S. Treasury adjusted its medium- and long-term Treasury issuance guidance that had been in place since early 2024. Dealers said the move opens the door to expanding short-term Treasury issuance and potentially reducing long-term Treasury auction sizes. In a statement on Wednesday, the Treasury said that based on currently projected financing needs, it expects medium- and long-term Treasury auction sizes to remain unchanged "for the next several quarters." Crucially, the Treasury removed the word "at least" that had previously preceded this period. The new wording means short-term Treasury auction sizes could increase while long-term Treasury issuance could shrink. As long-term yields rose to the highest level in more than 20 years, dealers had been discussing this issue for months.
