Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO of Alphabet's self-driving company Waymo, said the company decided to end its exclusive robotaxi partnership with Uber in response to customer demand for more reliable booking of autonomous ride-hailing services through a unified platform. Currently, in the two U.S. cities of Austin and Atlanta, users can only book Waymo's autonomous vehicles through the Uber platform. Waymo said it plans to launch its own app to provide related services in these two cities in January 2028, at which point competition between the two companies will further intensify. Mawakana said Waymo decided to adjust the partnership model because passengers in Austin and Atlanta cannot be guaranteed to be able to hail a Waymo autonomous vehicle. Although users can select an autonomous vehicle in the Uber app, a successful match is only possible when a vehicle is available nearby.
