Goldman Sachs restricts traders and bankers from using certain AI tools.
After assessing productivity and risk, Goldman Sachs has banned most employees from using advanced AI tools designed specifically for programming, a move that has sparked discontent among some. For months, Goldman had allowed bankers to use Anthropic PBC's Claude Code and Microsoft's GitHub at work. Internal guidance updated in October shows that the bank will now restrict these tools to engineers only. A person familiar with the matter said the ban has upset some traders, who had previously used the tools to speed up parts of their work, such as monitoring client trading flows, modeling market changes and positions, and producing text and graphic content. In July, Goldman Chief Information Officer Marco Argenti had praised the "coding vibe" among non-technical staff such as traders and bankers. In an interview, he said these employees used AI tools to develop solutions and then handed the results to some of the 12,000 engineers for refinement.
