OpenAI's Altman on memory shortage: Global DRAM should be prioritized for data centers; leaving it idle in gamers' PCs is a waste.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a podcast interview on Friday that amid tight DRAM memory chip supply, centralizing memory deployment in data centers and increasing utilization is the way to use limited resources more effectively. Altman said that from a global resource allocation perspective, having everyone equip their personal computers with large amounts of limited DRAM, which may only be in use 5% of the time, is a "pretty terrible" waste of resources. He argued that in an environment of severely constrained global supply chains, memory resources should be maximally concentrated in cloud data centers to achieve higher utilization.
