U.S. regulators on Wednesday proposed new rules to speed up liquefied natural gas (LNG) project construction and expand export capacity. This is part of the Trump administration's broader push to accelerate energy infrastructure development and lower consumer costs. The United States is currently the world's largest LNG exporter and is expected to add another 100 million tons of annual LNG capacity by the end of this decade. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the new rules proposed by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) will help operators adopt new technologies to save costs and improve safety, and that the use of these technologies can save $100 million in expenses annually. The proposed rule update revises PHMSA's safety framework for LNG facilities and incorporates National Fire Protection Association standards on LNG facility siting, design, construction, operation, and maintenance.
