Apple's stock price is highly divergent from the trend of chip stocks, making it an ideal choice for hedging against AI concept stocks.
As market sentiment toward the AI trade swings wildly, a fairly stable trading pattern has emerged in the stock market: no matter how AI concept stocks move, Apple Inc. often moves in the opposite direction. The iPhone maker's shares have risen 28% so far in 2026, making it the largest contributor to the S&P 500's 12% gain. Apple is also the best performer among this year's "Magnificent Seven" tech stocks, a sharp contrast with 2025, when Apple rose just 8% for the full year, near the bottom of that group. The reason for this divergence is relatively straightforward. Most large tech companies are pouring money into AI infrastructure, while Apple has largely sat out the capex race, instead continuing to focus on what it has always done best: building products that capture consumer attention, such as the newly launched foldable iPhone Duo. As Wall Street's views on AI capital spending keep shifting, Apple stock has become a preferred choice for investors who want to keep allocating to large-cap tech while avoiding some volatility risk. "Apple is a very liquid tool to hedge AI volatility," said Jordan McCall, a senior portfolio manager at Russell Investments, which manages $418 billion in assets. "If you start to get worried about AI but still want to keep tech exposure, Apple is a pretty good holding." He said: "When the market gets nervous, Apple becomes a place where money seeks safety."
