Recently, a netizen from Chengdu, Sichuan, called for "abolishing the high school entrance examination (zhongkao)." The netizen asked, regarding streaming students to vocational high schools, "which parent is willing to accept this?" and requested that every child be allowed to receive high school education on an equal footing, with streaming deferred until university. In response, the Chengdu Municipal Education Bureau stated on "Wenzheng Sichuan" that the zhongkao is currently the basic system for allocating high school admission slots, and conditions are not yet in place for completely abolishing it. Chengdu is gradually weakening the impact of a single exam by expanding the proportion of quota-based admission to quality high schools, advancing pilot programs integrating general and vocational education and comprehensive high schools, and clearing pathways for vocational education students to enter university through the vocational college entrance examination. Regarding the burden of tutoring and students staying up late, the bureau will continue to implement the "double reduction" policy, regulate off-campus training, and urge schools to enforce homework and daily schedule management.
