US media: Over $40 trillion in national debt will ultimately drain Americans' wallets.
The website of U.S. newspaper The Hill published an opinion piece on October 17 stating that U.S. national debt has surpassed the $40 trillion mark, a figure so large it is difficult to imagine, and that the massive debt will ultimately hit the wallets of ordinary Americans. The article noted that when Trump began his second presidential term in January 2025, U.S. national debt was already enormous, standing at $36.2 trillion at the time. However, in just over a year, the article emphasized that the primary victim of this massive fiscal shock is the federal government's own budget. Today, the funds the U.S. government uses to pay compound interest on historical borrowing already exceed defense spending, and also exceed the funding for health care for millions of people. The article argued that Washington has built a financial system in which the nation has become a tool for paying interest to global bondholders. Bills owed yesterday are devouring tomorrow's public spending, and the actual situation is quite worrying.
