NBA Tightens Sports Betting Oversight: Restricts Betting Markets, Deploys AI to Monitor Suspicious Wagers
Ahead of the 2026-2027 season, the NBA is stepping up its sports betting oversight. Documents show the league is tightening restrictions on the betting markets offered by its authorized betting partners and deploying artificial intelligence technology to identify suspicious betting activity. The measures come as Commissioner Adam Silver pushes for access to more betting data and tighter control over the types of bets that can be offered on games. He said the concerns also extend to prediction markets. The NBA sent letters to sportsbooks including FanDuel, DraftKings and Fanatics, imposing restrictions on several categories of bets: first basket scorer bets, bets related to players projected to play fewer than 12 minutes in a game, and same-player underperformance parlay combinations. Such bets can easily raise integrity risks because a single player has the ability to influence the outcome. The rule changes stem from multiple betting cases involving NBA-affiliated individuals, including former players Jontay Porter, Terry Rozier and Damon Jones, as well as Chauncey Billups, who is both a former player and coach.
