A report from the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab says two Israeli companies, Candiru and Discover Tech, manipulated online advertising to install surveillance software on Al Jazeera devices. Discover Tech used online advertising platforms to target and infect devices, disguised itself as a legitimate advertising company, and placed ads through multiple major ad networks, including Google-operated ones. Using advertising to deliver spyware and hack phones and computers is a relatively new development, and researchers warn that the online advertising ecosystem has become a security threat and are calling on cybersecurity agencies and regulators to launch an urgent investigation.
