The President House of Pakistan issued a statement on the 11th saying that President Zardari approved the imposition of a state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in the northwest of the country that day due to the increasingly deteriorating security situation in the province. The statement said that the decision was made after comprehensively considering the recommendations of the federal cabinet and reports from relevant agencies on the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. The Prime Minister's Office of Pakistan issued a statement the same day saying that the federal cabinet listened to a briefing on the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. In view of the continuously deteriorating security situation in the province and the provincial government's passive response, the cabinet recommended that the president exercise constitutional powers to impose a state of emergency in the province. Recently, armed violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province has surged, and Pakistani security forces have stepped up counter-terrorism operations in the province.
