Musk said that given his companies' expertise in building custom equipment, he believes they will likely "figure out how to make chips better than anyone." Speaking to a group of customers and investors outside Tesla's Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, Musk said that although he currently "doesn't know how to make microchips, we'll figure it out." He noted during his livestreamed appearance at the X Takeover event on Saturday that on tours of competitors' facilities, he didn't see much custom equipment, and he said his companies have extensive experience building such equipment, which enables them to improve manufacturing processes. "I think it's fair to say it's one of the hardest things in the world," Musk said. "I don't want to be complacent or take it for granted, but I think we will very likely figure out how to make chips better than anyone. Honestly. I don't know how long it will take. It could take a few years."
