Zhang Han, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, answers questions from reporters.
Question: Lai Ching-te delivered a so-called "Double Ten" speech in Taipei today. What is the spokesperson's comment on the part concerning cross-strait relations? Lai Ching-te's speech disregards facts, confuses right and wrong, misleads the public, and reveals ulterior motives. It is a "true-color performance" by a "pragmatic worker for Taiwan independence." In his speech, he stubbornly clung to the separatist thinking of "Taiwan independence," hyped up the "mainland threat," preached the false narrative of "democracy versus authoritarianism," and attempted to "seek independence by force" and "rely on external forces to seek independence," provoking cross-strait confrontation and undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China. This is the true status quo of the Taiwan Strait. The one-China principle is a basic norm of international relations and a universal consensus of the international community. It is also an important part of the post-World War II international order. The future of Taiwan can only and must be decided jointly by all Chinese people, including our compatriots in Taiwan. We will adhere to the one-China principle and the "1992 Consensus," broadly unite compatriots from all walks of life in Taiwan, resolutely crack down on "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, oppose interference by external forces, and safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. We will uphold the concept of "both sides of the strait are one family," deepen cross-strait exchanges and cooperation, promote the peaceful development and integrated development of cross-strait relations, and advance the great cause of national reunification and the great cause of national rejuvenation.
