AI subscription fees remain unchanged while services shrink; AI usage costs inflate.
OpenAI and Google have cut usage quotas or the number of available models while maintaining subscription fees for existing AI services. Users now pay the same amount but receive less service, or must upgrade to a higher-tier plan to continue using existing models. This effectively constitutes a kind of "AI usage fee inflation," because the cost required to maintain the same level of service has risen. Google deducts usage quotas based on question complexity, features used, and conversation length. Tasks requiring higher reasoning capability or complex operations consume quotas faster, meaning users may hit monthly limits earlier even if their subscription fees remain unchanged. OpenAI attributes the limit adjustments to improved model efficiency. Although the two companies take different approaches, both aim to steer users toward higher-tier plans to gain access to more high-performance AI. A tech industry source noted: "Even if subscription prices stay the same, the cost of accessing the models and usage you need may rise."
