Australian car ramming incident has injured 9 people; the driver has been arrested.
Central Station reporters have learned that at around 9:30 a.m. local time on the 3rd in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, a car drove into a crowd as fans lined the roadside to send off the Newcastle Knights, who were about to travel to Sydney to compete in the Australian National Rugby League grand final, causing multiple injuries. Emergency services dispatched 10 ambulances and 3 helicopters, and medical personnel and police arrived at the scene to treat the injured. According to Australian sources, the incident has caused at least 9 injuries, 2 of whom are in critical condition. New South Wales police said the driver has been arrested. The Newcastle Knights later issued an official statement saying that due to a major emergency, the team bus had changed its original route and taken a detour. The premier of New South Wales said the incident was "heartbreaking."
