Diesel resupply disrupted: Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant plans to reduce the number of standby emergency generators.
The International Atomic Energy Agency stated on October 2 local time that due to persistently low diesel fuel reserves, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is considering further reducing the number of emergency diesel generators on automatic standby. Emergency diesel generators mainly provide power to the nuclear power plant's critical safety systems when external power supply is interrupted. The IAEA explained that from August to September this year, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost external power for an extended period and relied on emergency diesel generators for nearly three consecutive weeks, causing a significant decline in diesel reserves. Due to nearby military activities, recent efforts to replenish diesel remain obstructed. Meanwhile, the external power supply to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is also relatively fragile. The IAEA stated that since June this year, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has lost external power 10 times and currently relies on only one 330-kilovolt external transmission line, making the reliability of backup power particularly important. IAEA Director General Grossi stated that the continued lack of diesel supplies is exacerbating the already fragile nuclear safety situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, and called on relevant parties to ensure fuel reaches the nuclear power plant as soon as possible.
