Apple's new CEO Ternus launches deep reforms: streamlining structure, accelerating product iteration.
Apple CEO John Ternus has begun overhauling the iPhone maker just weeks into the job, aiming to speed up product development, broaden the device lineup, and build a leaner organization weighted toward engineering. People familiar with the matter said preliminary ideas under consideration include moving away from a strict traditional spring-and-fall product launch cadence, cutting some middle-management roles, and reducing layers between engineers and senior executives. Ternus has said that to stay competitive in the AI era, Apple must ship products faster and increase its tolerance for trial-and-error innovation, the people said. Cost-cutting efforts are already underway, the people said. With growth in the services business slowing, Ternus is also hunting for new revenue streams and exploring ways to earn more from existing products. Apple has mapped out a massive product pipeline for next year, including AirPods with cameras, its first smart glasses, and a redesigned iPhone to mark the 20th anniversary of the device. To bring that slate of new products to market, Ternus is rethinking launch timing. Ternus wants Apple to release products more frequently throughout the year.
