According to The Wall Street Journal, the heads of research at OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta Platforms and Microsoft are calling on policymakers to review how far their respective companies have progressed in automating AI research, responding to industry-wide calls for stronger regulation of AI technology. In a paper published Monday, researchers including OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki, Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark, Microsoft chief scientific officer Eric Horvitz and Meta vice president of AI research Dawn Song wrote that the automation of AI research could trigger an "intelligence explosion," a development trajectory that could compress progress that would otherwise take years into months or even less, causing the pace of technological evolution to outstrip human comprehension. The paper's authors, writing in a personal capacity, argued that policymakers should urgently demand greater transparency to understand how far companies have already gone in automating model development.
